WARWICK, N.Y. (June 17, 2009) - Warwick Grove, the Traditional Neighborhood community in the historic village of Warwick, announces that its “Village Life Arts Series” will now include an unforgettable evening concert on August 7th featuring the Warwick Chambers Players. This exceptional string group is comprised of three of the New York Philharmonic’s finest virtuosi – Michelle Kim, Assistant Concertmaster, Eileen Moon, Associate Principal Cellist and Rebecca Young, Associate Principal Viola.
Violinist Michelle Mi-Kyung Kim has been Assistant Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic since 2001. She has performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, New Jersey Philharmonic, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, and Pacific Symphony. An active chamber musician, Ms. Kim has collaborated with violinists Cho Liang Lin, Christian Tetzlaff, and Pinchas Zukerman, cellists Mstislav Rostropovich, Lynn Harrell, and Gary Hoffman, and pianists Lang Lang and Yefim Bronfman. She has performed at various festivals including the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, La Jolla Chamber Music Festival, Strings in the Mountain, and the BRAVO Festival in Vail. Ms. Kim has also served as the first violinist of the Rossetti String Quartet, and was a Sterne Virtuoso Artist at Skidmore College in 2007-2008. A student of Robert Lipsett and former Presidential Scholar, Ms. Kim attended the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music as a Starling Foundation scholarship recipient, and considers Heiichiro Ohyama and Henry Gronnier her mentors. She has been a member of the faculty at the USC Thornton School of Music, the Colburn School, and the University of California Santa Barbara, and currently teaches at the Mannes College of Music.
Eileen Moon joined the cello section of the New York Philharmonic in 1998, and was named Associate Principal Cello in September 2007. Previously, she had performed with the San Francisco Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. A native of California, she began her studies with Irene Sharp at the San Francisco Conservatory, and subsequently received a bachelor of music degree from The Juilliard School and a performance diploma from the Hochshule fuer Musik in Vienna, Austria. Ms. Moon won fourth prize at the Tchaikovsky International Cello Competition in Moscow in 1994, and second prize at the Geneva International Cello Competition in 1991, which resulted in performances with Ensemble Instrumental de Grenoble as well as a radio recording with Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. Ms. Moon has performed chamber music in numerous venues in New York City, and appears frequently with the New York Philharmonic Ensembles at Merkin Concert Hall. She resides in Warwick, New York.
Violist Rebecca Young joined the New York Philharmonic in 1986 as its youngest member. In 1991 she won the position of Associate Principal Viola. Two months later she won the principal position of the Boston Symphony. After spending the 1992-93 season in Boston and two summers at Tanglewood, Ms. Young ultimately decided to return to her family in New York. She resumed her Associate Principal position with the Philharmonic in September 1994. As a chamber musician, Ms. Young has performed with many renowned groups, including the Boston Chamber Music Society, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, the New York Philharmonic Ensembles, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. She can be heard in Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet with Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, Pamela Frank, and Edgar Meyer on the Sony Classical label. In the spring of 1999, Ms. Young performed the world premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s Two Paths: Music for Two Solo Violas and Symphony Orchestra with the Philharmonic. The work was commissioned by Tomoko Masur, wife of Philharmonic Music Director Emeritus Kurt Masur and herself a former violist, for Ms. Young and Philharmonic Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps. The two performed it at Avery Fisher Hall, in Washington, D.C., and again during the Orchestra’s subsequent tours of the Canary Islands, Spain, and Portugal, as well as the Europe 2000 Tour. A graduate of The Juilliard School, Ms. Young lives in New Jersey with her husband, Jack Schatz, and their sons, Brian and Michael, and daughter, Emma.
